Scott's Ships
November 30, 2004 : Let the quilting begin! I think I've figured out the basics of what I want to do...

Okay, most of this you won't be able to see, because it's not all white quilt thread…
- The waves around the entire block are quilted in dark blue - to match the background.
- The X's in the gold blocks are quilted with a tan quilt thread, so they don't stand out much at all either.
- The boat is quilted with a thread closely matching the fabric, and all of the sails are quilted with red/maroon.
Those are the parts I did last night (well, the bottom wave anyway - I haven't done the other border waves yet).
- I'm thinking about quilting the waves in the water with white/off white/light blue so they stand out a little bit.
- I'm also thinking about putting in a cloud with white (the stitches won't be really visible, but they will add a bit of detail).
- And I thought I might add a hint of a bird - I'm not sure if it will show up in every block or not, we'll see as we go...

As for the wave block, this is kind of what I'm leaning towards...

Of course, the quilting lines of the waves will be blue or green, and they'll be a little neater too. The border will also continue with the waves and X's.
November 28, 2004: The quilt top piecing is finished!

November 21, 2004: Sashing strips and squares are all attached to the blocks, and I've started connecting the blocks together, in groups of 4 (2x2), starting from the bottom and working my way up.
September 5, 2004: It seems I tend to work on quilts in spurts. I have all of the blocks pieced now, but still have to add the sashing strips before I can put everything together. It takes a while to make sure I've got everything squared up, but I'm very pleased with it so far.

August 22, 2004: Some progress photos

A new look at the sashing and border fabrics
- I don't have enough of the darker blue with stars to do the sashing in it,
so I thought I would use the anchor print instead, with the dark blue /
stars as a border.
Here I have finally cut out the pieces I will need to make the wave (Snail's trail) blocks, and below that, I have started piecing them together.

These are a couple of mock-ups of the two blocks I plan to use, plus an idea of the sashing. I don't have enough of the dark blue sashing fabric, but I have another dark blue fabric with anchors and stars on it that I think will work just as well.

This is the layout idea I'm kind of working on for Scott's Ships.
I plan on using some brown and gray fabrics that look appropriate for the ship, red fabrics for the sails, and blue, green, purple fabrics that look appropriate for the seas.
I plan to do sashing and cornerstones between the blocks. And now that I've thought about it a while, I'm going to alternate the blocks with a block that looks like waves. I saw someone else do this with a Snail's Trail block, and thought it looked neat - my wave block will be a modified Snail's Trail though.
This fish batik will be the backing fabric:
