Allison's Jewel Box Quilt
October 29, 2006: The quilting is finished, and so is the binding! It is ready for me to sign and wash - the quilting is absolutely beautiful. And I chose to bind it with a bright orange-yellow-green-pink 60's pattern fabric.

April 1, 2006: My niece was recently commenting that her baby quilt is really too small for her now (though she continues to use it and carry it with her to sleepovers). I have had it in my mind to create a new, larger quilt for her, but have had several other obligations to fulfill.
With the discovery of having excellent machine quilting done for me by a local quilt shop at a fraction of what it would cost me (in time alone) to do it by hand, I am freed to embark on creating larger quilts for my family and friends much sooner than I anticipated.
And that is just what I started doing this weekend! I cut some fabrics and just began piecing them together so I could at least see how things were going to go. These blocks are 8 inches finished.

April 14, 2006: a couple more blocks pieced

June 24, 2006: a little more progress - I haven't joined all of these blocks yet, but I wanted to get an idea of how it was going to look, so I threw them up on my design wall.

September 3, 2006: The quilt top is finished, and it comes in at a whopping 92 inches wide by 108 inches long. WOWZA! I really love the 'piano key' border. I couldn't get a decent photo on my queen size bed, so I took it outside. Even on a cloudy day, I think it's nice and bright.

September 22, 2006: Pam Thorne will be quilting this quilt, and I've chosen a butterflies pattern and a variegated thread. It's guaranteed to be finished by Christmas, so I'm hoping to have it back to bind by at least the middle of December... :)
Backing: I was originally going to just use the purple/gold middle fabric for backing this quilt, but had only bought enough (5 yards) for a full-size quilt. I bought more of the orange/yellow fabric, but it was still not quite enough, so I sewed 3 panels of the fabrics together (orange/yellow on the outside, purple/gold in the middle). They are both flannels that I prewashed, and they feel nice and snuggly warm and soft.
