Books and Reading - Children's books
I loved reading as I grew up. One of my fondest memories as a child was going to the library to check out books to take home and read. In fact, I sometimes go back and re-read children's books. Other times, I read ones that I either missed growing up, or ones that were not written until after I was out of school. Below I've listed some of my favorites:
| Title | Author | Comments |
|---|---|---|
| Nancy Drew series | "Carolyn Keene" | One summer I remember checking out as many as I could (which was 8 books at a time), and sitting down to read them one right after the other. What a wonderful way to spend a summer vacation! |
| Hardy Boys series | Franklin W. Dixon | |
| Trixie Belden series | "Kathryn Kenny" and "Julie Campbell" | I began reading this series after having gone through most of the Nancy Drew and Hardy Boys series. I never made it through the entire series, because I couldn't find all of the books. |
| Harry Potter series | J. K. Rowling | I discovered this series after the release of the third book, Prisoner of Azkaban. What a thoroughly captivating series! |
| Dr. Seuss | I've read most of the books by Dr. Seuss. My favorites were easy-readers, such as Dr. Seuss's ABC, One Fish Two Fish Red Fish Blue Fish, and Hand, Hand, Fingers Thumb. | |
| Miss Suzy | Miriam Young | I don't really know why this is one of my favorite books, but it is one of the earliest ones I remember having read to me, and then reading myself. Miss Suzy is a gray squirrel who gets chased out of her oak tree home by some mean red squirrels, but she finds a dollhouse and meets a band of brave toy soldiers, and they help each other. |
| The Face on the Milk Carton | Caroline Cooney | I discovered this when I was working at a branch library, assistant to the children's librarian. It was really interesting, and I enjoyed the sequels. |
| Mrs. Piggle-Wiggle series | Betty MacDonald | Hilarious books! I still think her solutions to problems are quite entertaining and get the point across at the same time. Obviously, this is fantasy, but we all need a little fantasy now and then. |
| Danny Dunn series | Jay Williams | |
| Indian in the Cupboard | Lynne Reid Banks | |
| The Wizard of Oz | L. Frank Baum | |
